Why KhmerBasics

Built to make speaking the easy part.

Most apps teach you to recognize words. KhmerBasics is designed for the moment you actually open your mouth.

How it works

Listen. Speak. Reply.

A simple loop that gets you talking from your very first lesson.

  1. 01

    Listen

Hear a native speaker say the phrase — at natural speed and slowed down — so the sounds click before you copy them.

  2. 02

    Speak

Repeat aloud with flashcards reinforcing pronunciation and meaning. Short sessions, real progress.

  3. 03

    Reply

Practice the common Khmer response. Get used to the back-and- forth, not just the opening line.

Your speaker, your choice

Four native voices. Switch anytime.

Every phrase recorded by four native Khmer speakers — two male, two female — across Phnom Penh and rural accents. Pick the voice that feels most natural to you.

Dara

Male · Phnom Penh accent

Warm, conversational pace — your default city voice.

Sokha

Male · Siem Reap / countryside

Slower, deeper delivery — closer to provincial speech.

Sophea

Female · Phnom Penh accent

Clear, friendly delivery — your default city voice.

Channary

Female · Countryside / rural

Softer, lighter cadence — closer to rural speech.

Currently previewing placeholder TTS — final voices will be the real recorded speakers above.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

When will KhmerBasics launch?

We're aiming for an open beta in the coming months. Waitlist members get early invites and help shape what we build first.

Is it really free?

Yes — you'll be able to start learning with KhmerBasics for free. A paid tier with extra content and features is planned for later, but the core experience stays accessible.

Do I need to know the Khmer script?

Not at all. Every phrase ships with friendly romanization alongside the Khmer script, so you can speak from day one and pick up the script over time if you'd like.

Who records the audio?

All audio is recorded by native Khmer speakers — one male and one female voice — using a clean studio setup. You'll choose your preferred voice in the app.

What makes this different from other apps?

KhmerBasics is audio-first, situation-based, and built around the back-and-forth of real conversation. You don't just learn what to say — you learn what people say back, and how to reply.

Will there be a mobile app?

Yes. We're launching on the web first so we can iterate quickly. iOS and Android apps are on the roadmap right after public launch.
